This week we had our first GLC Volunteer Day of 2015 at Johnson-Habitat Park! Volunteers from the Greenway Leadership Corps met at Johnson-Habitat Park in southwest Denver for our "Park Design & Maintenance" Tour & Volunteer Day at Johnson-Habitat Park. Johnson-Habitat Park is a former landfill dump site, which is currently getting renovated & by May 2015 will have completed its transformation into an innovative outdoor education & urban camping amenity. GLC students met this week to get a tour of the park-in-progress and to hear from a special guest speaker - Michael Buchard, Senior Landscape Architect with Denver Parks & Recreation. We had a great time touring the nearly completed Johnson-Habitat Park and hearing from Michael Buchard, who is overseeing the project at Johnson-Habitat Park as well as our other RVIP (River Vision Implementation Plan) Projects. After the tour, we headed next door to Vanderbilt Park, where we helped out the South Platte River by doing a trash cleanup, removing trash from Vanderbilt before it could find its way into the river. We're looking forward to the next GLC Volunteer Day, which will be held on April 25th as a part of our annual Spring RiverSweep. If you're interested in attending, click here to RSVP! ![]() What is GLC? The Greenway Leadership Corps (GLC) is a youth group in Denver for middle and high school students to learn more about the environment and become active, informed citizens. Once a month starting in the spring of 2015, there will be a GLC Volunteer Day and meeting by the South Platte River. In addition to completing work projects to help out the South Platte Greenway, students will complete team-building exercises and also have a chance to hear from different guest speakers in the environmental field. Students who come to at least one volunteer day will also have the opportunity to attend GLC Outdoor Adventures trips, where they will travel around the city or up to the mountains for awesome new experiences in nature and more opportunities to volunteer outdoors. The weather is warming up and the SPREE team is excited to get back out in the parks, teaching children through hands-on experiences along the River. Nearly 5,000 elementary students will attend a SPREE Excursion this school year. For many of them, this field trip will be the first time they catch a crawdad, ride a boat, or even visit the South Platte River! Meet the 2015 SPREE Team! We've added two new seasonal educators to the SPREE team this spring! Find out more about the entire SPREE staff here. Support SPREE Excursions!
