NATIVE NOVEMBER AT SPREE HOLIDAY CAMP

CAMPERS LEARN ABOUT NATIVE ANIMALS OF THE SOUTH PLATTE AND NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY

Picture
How did early Native Americans use the South Platte River, get food, and entertain themselves? What animals are native here and which ones come from somewhere else? These are just a few of the questions campers explored at SPREE's recent Adventures Outside Holiday Camp.

Campers who joined us on Monday focused on native animals. We learned about the native black-footed ferret population, which experienced sharp decline in the 1980’s due to habitat loss and disease but is now growing again. We made a yarn food web including ferrets and other animals of the prairie, gaining insights about the interconnectedness of organisms in an ecosystem.  We also explored the South Platte River, looking for native fish and animals as well as the invasive rusty crayfish and Asiatic clam. We concluded our day by making pinecone turkeys and creating clay sculptures of our favorite native animals.

On Tuesday, the group learned about Native American history. We made costumes and acted out the Ojibwa legend of how the beaver got its tail. Campers made mini bows and arrows out of twigs and feathers and also decoded messages made out of symbols. We had fun learning about the Arapaho and Cheyenne by building miniature tepees and decorating shaker instruments and whirligigs. The afternoon was spent catching critters in the river and enjoying the great play spaces at Johnson Habitat Park.

FAMILY FISHING DAY
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2015

Over 130 people attended this year's Family Fishing Day at Overland Pond Park. The day started off with a quick fishing tutorial provided by the 13 staff and volunteers of Environmental Learning for Kids (ELK). Families learned how to hold a pole, cast, and tell others around when they caught a fish by yelling “Fish On!” SPREE staff also had a table where kids could feel a real beaver pelt and shift through the sand to find macroinvertebrates. At the end of the day, everyone got to take home a fishing pole provided by ELK!

We would also like to thank Matt Gregory the Denver Department of Parks and Recreation and Donny Roush (and his daughter!) from Earth Force for tabling at this event and making it even better!

FALL COLORS HOLIDAY CAMP

SPREE CAMPERS LEARN ABOUT FALL

SPREE campers recently enjoyed a break from school and some beautiful weather while learning about autumn. This one-day holiday camp took place on November 2nd, just in time to see changing colors at the newly remodeled Johnson-Habitat Park. We took a fall hike, made fall-inspired crafts, and did a leaf experiment.  In the afternoon, we explored the river and caught crawdads.

Campers started the day with a brief introduction to why leaves change color in the fall. They then gathered leaves, crushed them and watched as the pigments were gradually revealed on a coffee filter. (To try this at home, see instructions at www.howweelearn.com/science-experiments-for-kids/.) Volunteers dressed up in colorful shirts while the group learned about chlorophyll and the different pigments in leaves.
SPREE educators Ramsey and Helen shared their knowledge of the plants and animals in the park on a hike. Campers made observations about the seasonal changes around them and learned what plants and animals do as they prepare for winter.

We also enjoyed some quiet time listening to a story about autumn. Campers drew their favorite fall activities, creating their own pages to add to the book. We made beautiful stained glass leaves using contact paper and tissue paper, which caught the sunlight and decorated the windows during the day. Campers also created their own scratch art to reveal colors underneath, just like the hidden colors in leaves.

For many, the best part of the day was catching crawdads and other macroinvertebrates in the South Platte River. What a great way to start November!
