GLC SHOWSHOEING ADVENTURE IN ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK

For the Greenway Leadership Corps event this month, GLC students traveled up to Rocky Mountain National Park for a full day of snowshoeing in the Bear Lake region. Before exploring the park and four frozen lakes on snowshoes, GLC had a chance to hear from a National Park Service Ranger about her career in natural resource management. Here are some photos from the day!

Next GLC Event:
January 7 - GLC Volunteer Teaching Day at Joe Shoemaker Elementary School (4-8 pm). Joe Shoemaker Elementary School, located along the Cherry Creek in Aurora, CO, is named for the founder of The Greenway Foundation and is an experiential learning school that focuses on environmental education. Joe Shoemaker School's mission is to ensure that all children achieve academic and personal excellence, experience joy in learning, and use their individual and collective talents and passions to become citizen scholars who value themselves, others, and the environment. In January (exact date TBA), GLC students will visit Joe Shoemaker School to run some after-school activities for elementary students down at the Cherry Creek. The volunteer day will also include an environmental education training session and a chance for GLC students to get familiar & practice with the curriculum & lessons before teaching.

The Greenway Leadership Corps (GLC) met last month for our most recent GLC Outdoor Adventure. We'd like to send a special shoutout to Thrillseekers Climbing Gym in Denver, CO for setting us up for an amazing night of climbing.

Interested in getting involved with the program? Read on for more information about Greenway Leadership Corps!

GLC

Greenway Leadership Corps (GLC) is a youth group in Denver for high school students to learn more about the environment and become active, informed citizens. Click here for more information about the program, and click here to register for GLC & RSVP for specific events. Here are the upcoming GLC Events that we have planned:
  • December 5th - Showshoeing Adventure in Rocky Mountain National Park (9 am - 5 pm). (Registration for this event is full). In December we will be taking a showshoeing trip up to Rocky Mountain National Park, where we will explore the mountains on snowshoes, play some fun winter games, and hear from a National Park Service Ranger about his career in natural resource management. We will meet at Johnson-Habitat Park to leave for RMNP at 9 am, and will return to Johnson-Habitat Park by 5 pm. Registration for this event is full.
  • January (date TBA) - GLC Volunteer Teaching Day at Joe Shoemaker Elementary School.
  • February 20th - Shreddin' in the City (noon - 3 pm). Meet us down at the Ruby Hill Rail Yard in Denver for a fun day of volunteering, skiing and snowboarding right here in Denver! First established in 2007 in collaboration with Winter Park, Ruby Hill Rail Yard was the country's first free urban terrain park based in a city. The experimental program instantly became a nationwide model for numerous city & ski resort collaborations, and has since attracted thousands of youth and adults. GLC students will be able to rent skis or snowboards for free at Ruby Hill, and The Greenway Foundation will provide free boot rentals and warm winter clothing as needed. GLC students will also have a chance to hear from Denver Parks & Recreation employees about the history of the rail yard and the intersection between the worlds of public park management & outdoor recreation. We will do an hour of volunteer park maintenance work at Ruby Hill, and then have a chance to experience the rail yard ourselves! There are a limited number of spots available for this trip, so please register soon if you are interested (click here to sign up now). Priority will be given to students with some prior involvement with the GLC program.
  • March 18th-19th - CAEE Advancing Environmental Education Conference (8 am - 5 pm) - The Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education’s Advancing Environmental Education Conference is annually hosted by the Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education (CAEE), a statewide leader in environmental education since 1989. This year's conference, which will be held at Auraria Campus in Denver on March 18th and 19th, will offer a variety of session topics, inspiring speakers, and many opportunities for networking and discovering new ideas, tools and techniques. Attendance is free for GLC students, but students must first register for the GLC event to confirm their scholarship spot! There are a limited number of spots available for this trip, so please register soon if you are interested. Priority will be given to students with some prior involvement with the GLC program.
