On Saturday, the Greenway Leadership Corps (GLC) woke up early to drive to Deckers, a popular fly fishing location along the South Platte River nestled near Pike National Forest. There, we met up with folks from Denver Trout Unlimited (DTU). DTU is the Denver branch of a nation-wide non-profit dedicated to the conservation of freshwater streams, rivers, and associated upland habitats for trout, salmon, other aquatic species, and people. Almost all of us had never been fly fishing before, so we first got outfitted with waders and fly fishing rods. We walked down to the river, and DTU explained the mechanics of casting and how to know if you've caught a fish. We all headed to a spot along the shore or in the river and got started! We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day, and by the end a couple of students had caught a fish! We all had a great time and many of our students were talking about how they could get out to fly fish again.
The GLC has a lot of fun events coming up, if you want to get outside with some fellow high schoolers. You can come to CSU with us in November, practice archery in December, or snowboard at Ruby Hill in January - sign up here to save you spot so you don't miss out on our next fun adventure!
