Last Saturday, the Greenway Leadership Corps (GLC) traveled to Rocky Mountain National Park for a fun-filled day of snowshoeing! 14 students joined us as we went up to the park - 12 of whom had never been snowshoeing before. Upon arriving at the Visitor Center, we were greeted by a national park ranger who outfitted us in snowshoes and snowpants. We then drove to the Bear Lake Trailhead and began our hike! Along the way, our park ranger guide taught our students about snow science and different adaptations that animals have to prepare for the snow in RMNP. We ate lunch next to a frozen Nymph Lake, and on our return to the trailhead, we stopped at an Avalanche Study Area. The park ranger explained what purpose it served, how it operated, and how snow impacts our watershed.
We had a great day, and were treated to a light snowfall in the park. The GLC is having it’s next event on January 19, so be sure to check it out! We’ll be meeting at Johnson Habitat Park to work on resumes! We’ll help you figure out what to include, how to best describe your experiences, and make it look professional - all while eating pizza and watching Planet Earth! Sign up or show you might want to come here.
