Spring was in full swing Saturday as the Greenway Leadership Corp (GLC) met to celebrate Earth Day. The Greenway Leadership Corps meets once a month for stewardship events, outdoor adventures and professional development. Each event is free of charge to high school students with no experience or gear necessary!
With the excitement of 24 high school volunteers and beautiful bright blue skies to encourage us, we set out to give back to our parks along the South Platte River.
Our day started with some name games and team building activities, followed by an introduction to the importance of mulching and the tools the students would be using by Denver Parks and Recreation. Students quickly began dividing up the many tasks at hand and got to work. Even with the hard work at hand, we found time to have some laughs and find some “fun” trash in our park! Be sure to check out instagram for our recent #trashtag @greenwayleardershipcorp!
By lunchtime, our team of high schoolers had successfully mulched 40 trees and shoveled dozens of bags of mulch for Denver Parks and Recreation to use all season. We ended our day with a trash pick-up around Vanderbilt Park, ensuring that our students really did their part to keep our parks and the South Platte River healthy and clean!
We couldn’t have helped our parks without all of our wonderful high school volunteers and the team at Denver Parks and Recreation.
