It’s the start of a new school year, which means that The Greenway Foundation has hired ten new interns for its 2019-2020 excursion season! These students are juniors and seniors at Kipp Denver Collegiate (KDC) that applied and interviewed with us to earn a spot as part of our River Ranger team. This year, three of the River Rangers are returning interns from last year’s program! The River Ranger program is designed for high school students to develop their leadership and public speaking skills, as well as a knowledge of the principles and strategies behind environmental education. Our KDC River Rangers are required to attend four teaching days, at least two Greenway Leadership Corps events, and one day of SPREE holiday camp. After completion of the internship, River Rangers then have the opportunity to apply and interview for our paid summer position!
Our River Ranger interns will be staffing SPREE’s 5th grade field trips to Overland Pond Park, in which they will teach lessons about beaver adaptations, how to paddle on a raft, pollution in the South Platte River, and how to perform different water quality tests. Our River Rangers will be paired up with each other and one SPREE staff member and will work their way up towards teaching an entire 20-minute lesson by themselves to 15 students! We are incredibly excited about this season’s interns, and cannot wait to see them develop their skills as educators while also becoming a strong, supportive team. We certainly hope that some of these high school students will be inspired enough to pursue a career in education one day!
