Update on Chatfield Storage Reallocation Project (CSRP) Posted 1/28/19
Recently, board members of The Greenway Foundation and the Colorado Parks Foundation visited Chatfield State Park for an update on the Chatfield Storage Reallocation Project (CSRP). Board members had a chance to view projects completed in 2018, including Plum Creek Nature Area extensive revegetation efforts and completion of new recreation trails. The foundations have been interested in and supporters of the project for decades. Over the years they have donated staff time, funding and services to help get the project studied and approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Now the Feasibility Report and Environmental Impact Statement requirements are being implemented.
Construction on CSRP began in fall 2017. Since then, tremendous progress has been made on the environmental mitigation and recreational modification projects required by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps). The $171 million project is expected to be completed in 2020, but all elements of the project must be approved by the Corps before members of the Chatfield Reservoir Mitigation Company (CRMC) may begin storing water in the reservoir. When the separate elements are completed and approved by the Corps, CRMC members will be allowed to store an additional 20,600-acre feet of water in the reservoir.
2019 – Season Two
Chatfield Reservoir Mitigation Company is anticipating reopening a large majority of the recreational areas impacted by Memorial Day 2019.
Please continue to visit chatfieldreallocation.org/construction for regularly updated information on construction activities and closures.

Projects underway in Season Two (2019) include:
|
- Kingfisher Day Use Area and Gravel Pond - Kingfisher Day Use Area and the Gravel Pond closed for construction in October 2018. Both are anticipated to reopen by May 24, 2019.
- Swim Beach - The parking lots and access to the shoreline reopened in October 2018. While the area will be open, the new Swim Beach facilities will remain closed until Memorial Day weekend 2019.
- South Platte River Area Mitigation - Environmental mitigation activities are well underway within the South Platte River area. CRMC, Chatfield State Park, and the contractor have worked closely to clearly mark closed trails and define construction areas. For your safety, the public’s cooperation is requested to stay off closed trails and out of construction areas. The trail closures are anticipated to remain in place until Summer 2019.

Brief History and Scope of the Chatfield Storage Reallocation Project
The Chatfield Reservoir Reallocation Project will allow for additional water storage space within in the existing U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ flood control reservoir. The project made significant progress during 2014. In May, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ study was concluded and a Record of Decision was issued. In September, the Water Storage Agreement was approved. Earlier in the year, the State of Colorado approved a state mitigation plan for the project.
There is broad support for the Chatfield project. In addition to The Greenway Foundation, the project is supported by other environmental organizations, including Sierra Club, Western Resource Advocates, Conservation Colorado (formerly Colorado Environmental Coalition), Trout Unlimited and the Foundation for Colorado State Parks. Implementation planning is now underway. Project History: With signing of the Record of Decision on May 29, 2014, and the Water Storage Agreement on October 9, 2014, the next step was to address environmental mitigation and recreational modification measures.
