SPREE EXCURSIONS

Original SPREE Field Trips
If your class has the ability to meet us at one of our "normal" (aka pre-covid) field trip locations, we can still run an Original Field Trip for your class!
Please
click on the grade levels listed below to find out more about each of these Original Trips.
To sign up for an Original Trip, please use the same sign up system. Select the appropriate grade and select the all-day/two-session option. In the notes section, please specify that you want an Original Trip, which trip you want, and confirm that you will meet us at the correct park for the Original Trip. The schedule for Original Trips will be 10:00 am - 1:30pm for each class, with a capacity of 45 students.

ECE - Sights, Sounds & Smells of Nature - Johnson Habitat Park:

This excursion serves as an introduction to SPREE, the South Platte River, and the outdoors. Students will become nature explorers, scientists and detectives as they use their five senses to experience the environment around them. Hands-on investigation allows students to touch, hear, smell and see the different components of nature. Click here for more information!

Picture
Kindergarten - Animals of the South Platte - Pasquinel's Landing Park:

Students will complete activities focused around animals and their relationship to the river. Through animal tracking, an animal sorting game, and exploration near the river, students will start to build a better understanding of the types of animals who live in and along the South Platte River.  Students will further develop their outdoor explorer skills and have a chance to get close to the river and interact in a safe and fun way. Click here for more information!

1st Grade - Nature Explorers - Commons Park:

This excursion focuses on animals and their habitats. Students will learn about the resources all animals need, build an animal shelter, use clues to solve animal mysteries, see animal pelts and skulls, and go on a nature hike searching for signs of animals. Click here for more information!

2nd Grade - Rocks to Roots - Bear Creek Park:

This excursion is an exploration of the living and non-living elements of the Bear Creek ecosystem. The morning focuses on non-living things with activities including a rock hunt, an individual discovery hike, and mapping. The afternoon centers on the living components by investigating the plants and animals found on a group nature hike. Click here for more information!

3rd Grade - Travel through Denver's History - Confluence Park:

This excursion is an exploration of the birthplace of Denver at the confluence of the South Platte River and the Cherry Creek. During the morning, students rotate through 4 stations where they relive different parts of Denver's history leading up to the flood in 1864. During the afternoon, students learn about more modern Denver history as it relates to the South Platte River. Click here for more information!

Picture
4th Grade - Plains, Pioneers & Panning (for Gold!) - Grant Frontier Park:

This excursion explores life in Colorado from the days of Arapahoe and Cheyenne roaming the plains to the gold rush days of mining and panning to the pioneer days as plains homesteaders. Students also learn the importance of the Cottonwood tree to all of Colorado's earliest residents, explore the site of the first chartered city in Colorado, pan for gold, and turn over rocks to see what is living in the South Platte River. Click here for more information!

5th Grade - The River as a Resource - Overland Pond Park:

This excursion takes students on a day-long journey as scientists and explorers. Overland Pond is the perfect backdrop as students test water quality, learn about the ways that beavers adapt to life along the South Platte River, act out a story about pollution in the South Platte River, learn how to operate a white water raft, and work in teams to capture and observe living creatures. SPREE offers many unique opportunities for students to connect with the great outdoors right in the city. Educational field trips are offered throughout the school year. Seven grade-specific excursions are provided for students in ECE through 5th grade, each at a different public park along the South Platte River. These hands-on experiences introduce students to the River through fun and engaging activities that teach science, history, and the importance of the River to the city and its residents.

SPREE's award winning excursions are designed in line with the Colorado State Standards for education and the NAAEE Guidelines for Excellence in Environmental Education.

We also offer custom excursions for 6-12th grade groups, scout troops, and other groups.  For more information on custom excursions, please contact Deirdre Lee at excursions@greenwayfoundation.org.
