2021 Hero of the River Award Winner
Denver Water proudly serves high-quality water and promotes its efficient use to 1.4 million people in the city of Denver and many surrounding suburbs. Established in 1918, the utility is a public agency funded by water rates and new tap fees. It is Colorado’s oldest and largest water utility.
In August, 2019, Denver Water applied for and was, at the end of December, 2019, awarded a Variance by the USEPA to create an aggressive Lead Reduction Program Plan as an alternative to adding orthophosphates to their drinking water systems. Their goal is to have all lead service lines to be replaced with non-lead pipes by no later than 2035, with an initial progress review in 2023. Additionally, Denver Water is engaging in an equally aggressive initiative to provide free or cost-reduced on-site filtration units as an interim benefit to homeowners with lead service lines until said lines can be replaced. This is the first such variance of its kind awarded by the EPA in the Nation.
The leadership involved at all levels of the management team at Denver Water that lead to their decision request this far better approach regarding the elimination of lead service lines deserves respect and recognition and we excited to honor them as the 2021 hero of the River.
