300 lbs of Glass Recycled!
October 23, 2017

Last winter, The Greenway Foundation helped get a Clear Intentions glass recycling station installed at Johnson Habitat Park. Since then, 300 pounds of glass have been collected there and saved from ending up in a landfill!

GLC Trail Work with WRV
October 17th, 2017

This past Saturday, Wildlands Restoration Volunteers (WRV) teamed up with the GLC for a fun  morning of trail work in Eldorado Canyon. GLC high school students and WRV’s youth crew leaders worked on a plot of land that was affected by the 2013 flood.

Fall RiverSweeps 2017
September 28th, 2017

Over 150 people braved the cold, wet morning to join us for our RiverSweep Events on September 23rd!

Between the Fall RiverSweep, the Fall Family RiverSweep, and GLC RiverSweep we filled an entire 30 cubic yard dumpster full of trash and plant debris!

River Ranger Internship Kicks Off

The Greenway River Ranger program is about to kick off! The program is designed for Denver high school students to develop leadership skills and knowledge of the environment through hands-on environmental education training and professional development workshops. Total Solar Eclipse!

Campers Create Art Inspired by The River

SPREE campers became artists this week and created nature-inspired art pieces, from mud art to mandalas. We also met a special guest, local Denver artist Michele Brown, and helped her paint a canvas mural inspired by our waterways. ​

​SPREE Family Camp Out
July 30, 2017

​Students from SPREE summer camp and their families came to camp at Johnson Habitat Park last weekend. We had a great time exploring the park and the river, listening to a talk from a Denver Park Ranger, cooking dinner over the fire pit, roasting s'mores, and sleeping under the stars. The rainy evening didn't stop these hearty families from having a blast!

Amazing Animal Adaptations Week at SPREE Camp

From feathers to fur and talons to teeth, SPREE campers spent the past week investigating the features that make Colorado animals unique.
We made our own pecking woodpeckers, beaver dams, and more! Campers also explored skulls, pelts, and tracks on loan from Colorado Parks & Wildlife.

This past weekend, the GLC and River Rangers went white water rafting along the Arkansas River. Spring RiverSweeps Success!

​Progress toward the Environmental Pool Pledge Drive!       April 25, 2017

The pledge drive, announced last August, will add 500 acre-feet of environmental storage at Chatfield Reservoir through a community coalition. Denver Water has committed nearly $2 million to fund the purchase of 250 acre-feet of storage space in Chatfield — if The Greenway Foundation can raise the funds necessary to match that amount.​

The Greenway Foundation just installed a Clear Intentions recycling site at Johnson Habitat Park. Did you know that less than 17% of glass in Denver recycling bins actually gets recycled? These sites help reduce landfill waste and reduce manufacturing emissions. Come down to JHP the next time you have some glass to recycle! ​​

SPREE’s Fall Holiday Camps are underway, getting kids to the River on their days off from school. In October, SPREE held two days of programming at Johnson-Habitat Park with the focus on nocturnal animals.

River Ranger Internship Kicks Off

​This past Monday, our new cohort of High School River Rangers had their first teaching day! A class of 5th grades came to Overland Pond Park, and River Rangers taught activities about water testing, beaver adaptations, pollution in the city, and rafting. This was the start to their Greenway internship, which will last the entire school year.

Spring Campers Explore The River

Campers joined SPREE in March and April to learn about the South Platte River at Johnson-Habitat Park. During spring break week, we explored small critters on land and in water, creating our own “mini-beast” mascots. On April 11th, we dove into the world of macroinvertebrates, a SPREE favorite!

PrintReleaf calculates the trees consumed by our printing projects and “releafs” by planting trees in certified forests around the world. The process is fully audited and, coupled with Publication Printers’ existing sustainability efforts, actually adds trees to the world!

Winter Gear Drive

SPREE is collecting winter gear donations for students attending our school year programs. These educational field trips include weeks in the early spring and late fall, and occasionally students do not have proper outdoor gear. Your donations will help eliminate this barrier for students. GLC Event Recap: Snowshoeing Adventure in Rocky Mtn. National Park

This month GLC students traveled up to Rocky Mountain National Park for a full day of snowshoeing. Before exploring the park and four frozen lakes on snowshoes, GLC had a chance to hear from a National Park Service Ranger about her career in natural resource management. This year, The Greenway Foundation staff is looking to raise $20,000 to go into a third summer camp location. These funds will allow us to purchase crocs, nets, tanks, hire staff and offer scholarships for campers who will be attending camp at Joe Shoemaker Elementary.

Underground Investigations at SPREE Holiday Camp

How fast can a mole dig? What creatures might we find under a dead log? The first fall camp for SPREE’s Adventures Outside program emphasized the world under our feet. Campers learned about burrowing animals and insects and explored the South Platte River at Johnson Habitat Park.

World Water Monitoring Challenge 2015

Ever wonder where the water goes when you flush your toilet?
Hundreds of students discovered the answer and got to see the process this water goes through before it can be returned to the South Platte River at the Littleton/ Englewood Wastewater Treatment Plant last month. This was all part of their annual World Water Monitoring Challenge day.

Campers Explore Life Underwater

In Week 6, campers at SPREE’s Adventures Outside Camps explored below the surface of the River. We started off the week learning about watersheds and moved on to crawdads and fish. We ended the week with a fun trip to the Downtown Aquarium and a Fishing Day.

Week Five at SPREE’s Adventures Outside Day Camps was all about experimenting and inventing! We learned a lot from nature, took apart old machines, and even made our own inventions that could help the South Platte River.
Coors Light South Platte RiverFest 2015 Recap

This year's event was a big success!! We had 20,000 people come down to Little Raven St. over the Cherry Creek during June 27th & 28th. Festival attendees enjoyed SUP demos, a rock climbing wall, a kids' zone, several musical performances, over 30 vendors, an art competition, and so much more!

Public Meetings for the Denver Urban Waterways Restoration Study

Summer Camps: Special Agents Clean Up The River

Campers at SPREE’s Adventures Outside camps have been having fun while learning about the environment. In the first week, campers trained to become SPREE Force Special Agents, helping  Chompers defeat evil villains to keep the River safe and clean!

The Greenway Foundation and Denver Trout Unlimited today received a $50,000 grant from the Wells Fargo Environmental Solutions for Communities grant program, funded by the Wells Fargo Foundation and administered by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), to support their Sustainable South Platte River Initiative.

2014 Excursion Recap

2014 was a great year for SPREE Excursions! We expanded capacity to take an additional 1,000 students on Excursions. In total, over 4,400 ECE –5th grade students attended our hands-on field trips along the South Platte River.
