This specific pilot program has ended, but The Water Connection is still dedicated to enhancing stormwater runoff by installing filtration devices in urban areas.
Even though Denver appropriately prides itself on being a green city, the reality still exists that the South Platte River and its tributaries are a default trash receptacle for our city due to a number of source challenges, including the hundreds stormwater pipes that release into these urban waterways.
|
One way that The Water Connection is tackling this issue is coordinating the pilot program for Gutter Bins in Denver. These devices sit in storm drain inlets and catch trash and debris as it washes off sidewalks and streets, and keep it out of our urban waterways.
12 Gutter Bins installed for a pilot program around the City! Six around Park Ave and I-25, five around Civic Center Park, and one in Larimer Square were installed in April 2018. Three more bins have been installed near different Denver Public Schools as well! During the course of the pilot over 3,960 pounds of pollutants have been kept out of local waterways! Gutter Bins have also been installed at the Denver Zoo, in River Mile, Thornton, Parker, Fort Collins, Colorado Springs, and Vail. There are 45 bins collecting trash and debris in the state of Colorado!
Thank you to Frog Creek Partners for creating and installing for such wonderful devices! This program, in partnership with the City and County of Denver, will help create cleaner urban waterways for everyone in Denver.
